Photogrammetry and mapping
How to prepare a site for drone mapping
Mapping depends on more than the flight. The intended output, accuracy, site boundary and ground visibility should be clear before requesting a quotation.

Define the final product
State whether you need an orthomosaic, point cloud, 3D model, terrain model, volume calculation or change record. Specify file formats and the software that will use them.
Provide the site boundary
Share a boundary file, coordinates or a clear map. Include the area, terrain, vegetation, buildings and site access.
- boundary and area
- terrain and ground cover
- obstacles and excluded zones
- operator access
Set the required accuracy
Accuracy affects flight height, image count, control points and processing time. If the data is intended for design or formal measurement work, requirements should be set by a suitably qualified specialist.
Prepare site conditions
Moving vehicles, tall vegetation, water, snow and strong shadows can complicate processing. Choose timing that suits the purpose and confirm whether control points can be placed safely.
Key takeaways
Prepare the site boundary, required output and accuracy, data format, access information and known obstacles before contacting an operator.
