Photogrammetry and mapping

Orthomosaic, 3D model and point cloud

These outputs may come from similar photographs but serve different purposes. Choose according to what you need to measure, present or process further.

Last updated:

Orthomosaic

A corrected, consistent top-down image supports land-cover review, change records and GIS layers when produced to suitable accuracy.

3D model

It represents the shape of a site or object and supports presentation, massing review and condition records. Quality depends on image coverage and surface visibility.

Point cloud

A collection of points describing geometry can support measurement and specialist processing. Agree the format, density and coordinate reference system.

Choosing the output

Tell the provider what decisions the data must support, the accuracy needed and the software in which it will be used.

  • purpose
  • required accuracy
  • format and coordinates
  • data recipient

Key takeaways

An orthomosaic supports top-down analysis, a 3D model presents form, and a point cloud provides geometry for further processing.
