Agriculture

Drones in agriculture — what data can they collect?

A drone can capture a large field efficiently, but the value of the data depends on purpose, timing, sensor and interpretation.

Last updated:

RGB imagery

High-resolution visible images can document emergence, damage, standing water, tramlines and losses. An image alone cannot always identify the underlying cause.

Multispectral data

A multispectral sensor records bands beyond human vision and supports vegetation indices. Results require suitable calibration and field-context interpretation.

Thermal data and terrain models

Thermal imagery may show temperature differences, while photogrammetry can support terrain, drainage and volume review. Use depends on conditions and required accuracy.

Planning the survey

Define the problem, field boundaries, growth stage, resolution and format required by an agronomist or farm software.

  • field boundaries
  • date and growth stage
  • sensor type
  • analysis format

Key takeaways

Start with the decision the data should support, then select sensor, timing, resolution and analysis method.
